Tenses are inconsistent, vocabulary is childish and vulgar, and some information is disorganized, inaccurate and/or missing! In March 2008 producer and Oscar-winner Peter Hermann (“Nowhere in Africa”) commenced with the shooting of “Desert Flower” (the budget: USD 16 Mio). As a special ambassador to the United Nations, Somalian supermodel Dirie speaks out against the custom of genital mutilation, a "barbaric rite" that she underwent at age five. WARIS DIRIE ‚Desert Flower‘ and ‚Desert Dawn‘ (summary of and background to the autobiography) fundus. A somewhat interesting storyline and a disturbing issue (FGM) that must be addressed, but just poorly written all round.

That same year, she was appointed UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation(FGM). Waris is a survivor and I admire her greatly for having the courage to talk about all the things that she so openly talks about in this book, from the FGM to fashion industry. She has interviewed diplomats and heads of state on five continents, patients in an Addis Ababa hospital, rape camp survivors in Kosovo, and midwives in the mountains of East Timor. The "Desert Flower" started life as one of 12 children of a Somali nomad family, a people with no written culture, where the basic unit of currency is the camel.

Her previous work includes the international bestseller Desert Flower , which was adapted as a feature film. She traveled alone across the dangerous Somali desert to Mogadishu—the first leg of a remarkable journey that would take her to London, where she worked as a house servant; then to nearly every corner of the globe as an internationally renowned fashion model; and ultimately to New York City, where she became a human rights ambassador for the U.It seems to me that when people say that they don't want to interfere with somebody's religious liberties, they mean that they don't care enough to do something about the victims of specific 'religious liberties'. I especially like the fact that she is doing this without rejecting her culture, for which is proud, something that is very important as many people use this struggle to pass their racist messages.

She remembers her early childhood as carefree- racing camels and moving on with her family to the next grazing spot – until it came her turn to meet the old woman who administered the ancient custom imposed on most Somalian girls: circumcision. Despite her later acquired fame and wealth, she never forgets where she came from, she still has sincere love for the simplicities in life, and still prefers to live a nomadic life wherever possible. I thought Infidel, a memoir which covered similar ground, was a far superior book with a much more relatable and admirable narrator. Dirie redeemed herself somewhat in my eyes with her commitment to activism, but I still felt I couldn't really connect with her. On her very first day alone in London, without any legal staus, she finds a kind stranger, willing to let her stay with her,and help her all the way.Despite suffering female genital mutilation (FGM) at the age of five, and its life-long consequences, Waris Dirie escaped from her native Galkayo, Somalia, fleeing to Mogadishu to escape an arranged marriage. To be honest, I'm sometimes frustrated by the feminist associations because to me they seem to worry about such insignificant things.
