Some are pure fantasy (like a guy with wings playing baseball) while many others happened to some extent, and almost all include some kind of graphic sex (I’m not going there to describe it). The stories are filled with reference to alcohol, drugs, sexism, sex (a lot of it), toxicity in multiple shapes and forms.

Just wondering if someone else could provide me with an alternative perspective and perhaps make me appreciate it more. Bukowski became numb from the pain and began isolating himself from everyone around him, even other children at school. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. First in the weekly Los Angeles paper Open City, then in the New Orleans bi-weekly NOLA Express, and finally in the weekly Los Angeles Free Press.Barfly (the movie he wrote about his life) wasn’t bad, I watched it after reading, but then I read that he didn’t like his actor’s portrayal. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. So, I guess I chose a somewhat extravagant way to say that if an alien's first touch with humanity was through this book, they'd totally kill themselves without thinking. It wasn’t healthy for young strong American feminist brain-dead consumers to be reading the works of uhm … that woman-hating guy.

We all know that type of old man, a blunt and sarcastic one who have seen it all and tired of all the bullshit. Those syndicated appearances are not listed here, as they are duplicates of the columns as they appeared in the "home" papers. And not even because it was nasty or creepy (because let's face it, despite panic attacks and crap, I made it through Brett Easton Ellis' American Psycho and if I can get through that, I think I can get through any book). Notes of a Dirty Old Man (1969) is a collection of underground newspaper columns written by Charles Bukowski for the Open City newspaper that were collated and published by Essex House in 1969.

This could all be bluffing, but if not, then Bukowski has raped and beaten a good few souls in this world. This short autobiography places Notes of a Dirty Old Man into a clearer timeline, providing the reader a better perspective of Bukowski's life. I find it extremely difficult to rate this read, it is not your traditional novel, I cannot even recommend it, simply because I don’t believe a lot of people will understand what it was meant to serve.

This book has reconfirmed for me the fact that Bukowski is best at this form of writing - short stories.

Parole in libertà prendendo di mira tutti gli stereotipi possibili, dall'altra parte della barricata insomma. His poetry can be very hit and miss at times but his short story prose is more often good than bad and sometimes exceptionally fascinating and quirky. Even if it is all an act, all of the autobiographical shit, Bukowski still has the narrative perspective of a person who refused to be groomed by his parents, teachers, or lovers. His lack of publishing success at this time caused him to give up writing in 1946 and spurred a ten-year stint of heavy drinking. Writing as himself, or his alter-ego Henry Chinaski, Bukowski delves into America’s lowlife to eulogise life’s losers and antiheroes. As soon as he starts to get too close to these families or hosts he will leave without notice and go on to find a new place to stay.
