About this deal

These mountain bike tire pressure gauges are quite impressive. Not only will they help you enjoy your time on the mountain biking trail, but they will also help you save money in the long run. Properly inflated tires last for long and will keep your wheels in excellent condition.

As you can see, Scott rides a few PSI lower than Braydon. Heavier and more aggressive riders may need to inflate their front/rear tyres to 30/32 PSI, respectively. Most tyre manufacturers will have tyre pressures printed on the tyres themselves (assuming tubeless setup) as ranges; don’t go below the printed minimum pressure or above the maximum (generally 20-40 PSI). We spoke to some of our colleagues and athletes to get their opinion on what you should do when it comes to mountain bike tyre pressure. The main idea is that there is simply a balance to strike when pumping up bicycle tyres. And to help you with this, MICHELIN provides a range of recommended tyre pressures for all tyre models. Since bicycle tire pressure gauges fall under the commercial category, their error margins will range from +/- 3-5% for analog and +/-2% for digital. Analog vs Digital GaugesFor the longest time, people thought that keeping your tyre pressure high was enough to get good performance, but thanks to years of engineering, we’ve discovered that the ideal pressure to get the most out of your wheel actually ranges from situation to situation, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be high – this is especially important if you’re running niche styles like fat tyres . Well, tyres and their associated pressures make such a massive difference to the ride quality of any bike that it’s of utmost importance to keep them consistent, especially when testing bikes. It’s why we fit the same control tyres to all of our test bikes at mbr. But where a high TPI tyre will be used over rougher terrain, a slight drop in pressure – always within the recommended levels – may help to reduce the risk of a puncture. As you’ll have learnt by now, there’s a lot of detail here, and finding the right pressure for you and your bike is part art, part science.

As you might guess, whether a tyre is tubed or tubeless makes a world of difference for tyre pressure, with the latter requiring higher pressures to get the best performance and durability. Tubed tyres have an inner tube made of rubber that is filled with air and sealed inside the tyre. This tube is what holds the air pressure and allows the tyre to be inflated. PLEASE NOTE: Our online mountain bike tire pressure calculator can be used to estimate an optium tire pressure. This estimated value provides a good basepoint for you to make your own adjustments to, depending on the conditions, your suspension setup, frame geometry, rim width, brand/model of tire, and other personal preferences. So, what tire pressure should you use? If you’re simply after a setting that will work well in most cases, or a great starting point then our experienced testers recommend a base setting of:
