About this deal

From the Shetland Isles, Anna’s run - which took five months - took her down the northeast coast of Scotland towards Inverness, before heading down to Glasgow and Edinburgh via Aberdeen. In the end I set out to run the distance of 100 marathons and fell short of that, covering 90 instead.

Barefoot Britain: A Running Adventure Like No Other by Anna

It's a story which reveals the messy reality of taking on a crazy idea and, above all, shows how one person's will to dig deep and carry on can encourage others to do the same. By the end it even had me wanting to try out an ultra marathon, and now, several years later I’ve actually done a couple of marathons! Another thing that came out of it is that they wanted to take part in adventure and not feel like gender was a barrier at all. There are encounters with Israeli bartenders, Finnish poker players, sexy Bedouins, and Argentinean priests which make it one of the greatest adventure romance books. If you need some inspiration, then read this or any of McNuff books as they always make me want to find my own adventure. I saw Jamie and Anna talk during their book tour leg in Vancouver a couple of years ago and was dying to read their books afterwards.

With more and more people getting outside into the backcountry every year this has never been more important to read. Her voice was wonderful, and it really felt like reading updates from a friend (who happened to be running from the top of Scotland to London barefoot. I listened to this while hiking 150 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, so it was interesting to hear her talk about foot issues - I was very grateful for my shoes 🤣 but go Anna! Anna's positivity and inspiration is so tangible as you read and half way though reading the book I was so inspired, I went for my first run in about 3 years (with trainers! The book makes you question everything you thought you knew about running as you learn about the tribe. This money goes directly to non-profits who help make the world a better place and protect it for future generations. Mainly writing a review because Anna asked me to at the end of the book and that’s the kind of polite request I can get on board with. If they want to go on an adventure, hopefully they’ll think ‘oh yeah there was that crazy girl with pink hair and barefeet that did an adventure’. I’ve loved all of Anna McNuff’s books and this one took me on a whirlwind barefoot tour of the UK with her. She has been running five days a week, sometimes marathon distance, sometimes shorter, along a route that’s enabled her to inspire in person as many of the UK’s almost half a million Girl Guides as possible.

Barefoot Britain – McNuff Books

From tales of running the length of New Zealand, to cycling the Andes Mountains and a children’s book too. I wish I had joined in the run that October, I booked a day off work but ended up using that day to recover with my only ever running injury (wasn’t even a run but a jog the day before) but thanks to this book I feel as though I was there. The challenge received widespread media attention and included a feature on the cover of the UK's Women's Running Magazine [3] and an interview on BBC Breakfast with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker.Anna McNuff and Girlguiding join forces to encourage girls and young women to take on more adventures". I’ve been running in minimalist trainers for four years now, and in the 18 months leading up to the run I transitioned steadily from those to run in just thin socks, then totally barefoot. As always, the barefoot run was a huge experiment – one that I shared as openly as possible with youngsters and adults all the way through. Why take the shortest, most direct route through life, when you could choose the wiggliest, most mountainous one possible?

Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, travelling ever further from shore and safety. And with that, and a trademark McNuff hug, I retire from the group and watch the 10-strong remaining runners head further south down the map of Britain.McNuff has written for a number of magazines and newspapers, most notably The Telegraph Travel section. If you couldn’t have guessed from the hair, bare feet and the scale and obscurity of her challenge, Anna McNuff is an extremely energetic human with a matching personality.
